When we moved into our house last April, a friend who lives in the area mentioned that we have hard water around here. But I didn't notice anything and forgot all about it, until about a month ago. I began noticing a white film on my dishes. An internet search led me to a couple of products to try. My Walmart only had one of them: Lemi Shine.
This stuff is miraculous! After just one wash, I could not believe the difference. Not only was the visible white film gone, but even my white dishes that I couldn't see the film on suddenly felt clean! And I didn't know they felt grungy before! Eww, we were eating off of filmy dishes.
I couldn't get a very good picture, but you can see the measuring cup on the right is spotty and the one on the left is clear and shiny after just one wash with Lemi Shine. (And no, I'm not getting paid to write this up.)
You use Lemi Shine by filling the covered detergent cup with it, and the open cup with your regular detergent. The one bummer is that a little 15oz canister is about $3.50, more than I spend for 75oz of detergent at Aldi. And since I use as much of it for each wash as I was using of detergent, plus still use detergent, it's going to cost quite a bit more to run my dishwasher. But my dishes are clean, and that Works for Me!
I also just noticed on their website that it is all natural fruit acids and citrus oils with no phosphates, and that WFM too!

You should experiment with how much you have to use to actually keep things sparkly...maybe using it every other day would be enough and that would be cheaper!I've read that you don't need to fill both cups with regular detergent either to get dishes clean. I usually just half fill them and don't notice a difference.
Sometimes our town switches up which wells they are using and everyone in town suddenly has the icky white film.The first time it happened, everyone was calling dishwaher repairmen who had no clue.

I live in north central Arkansas and we have very hard water too. I use Great Value Dishwashing Gel (Lemon Scent) and have very little hard water buildup on the dishes. I thoroughly enjoyed reading your blog!
Hmmm...maybe I didn't read the directions. I tried Lemi Shine but didn't think it helped any. I might have filled both cups with it! I better try it again. Thanks for sharing.
So that's what the film is! I thought it was just water etching the enamel off.
Sometimes I just have to laugh at how clueless I can be! Thanks for the tip!

I agree with you about Lemishine! Nothing works like this stuff---but it is a fortune! Guess they can charge that much it it works that well!

I'm and Aldi shopper and my husband swears it's the cheap detergent that's aiding and abetting the hard water. I'll try your recommendation and we'll see. :)
