Fun With Scrabble Tiles

IMG_4319
If you ever come across a Scrabble game at a thrift store or garage sale for a couple bucks, be sure to grab it.  There are so many fun things to do with it besides just play the game.
When my sisters were here during the summer, we made Scrabble tile pendants.  Wendy had the idea  to make a bunch of them without the bail (the part that allows you to hang it from a chain), and just display them grouped in a bowl or apothecary jar.

That would be so cute, and fun to look through.  Here’s an idea I just came up with:  what if you saved some little scrap of pretty paper from every vacation or other special event and made a tile with it.  Then you could have a display of little mementos.  I love that idea!
Currently, I’ve made a message center with my game.  I glued two of the racks together and put them on a table along with a pretty milk glass bowl full of the tiles.  To begin, I spelled out ‘leave a message’, and we were off.  It’s hard for anyone to pass by it without changing the message.

Sometimes the message is fun, sometimes comical, sometimes encouraging, and to be honest, sometimes not so nice.  Yesterday I put “sing and be happy”, someone changed that to “be happy”, and someone (you know who you are) changed that to “be UNhappy”.  I’m trying to discourage that kind of thing, even if they are trying to be funny.
It’s getting the family communicating in a fun way, and that’s a good thing in my book!

Very cute ideas! I like the idea of putting a bowl out with a couple of stands and letting people create. It's sort of like the magnetic poetry that was so popular in the 90's.

What the funnest idea! I am going to be on the lookout for scrabble tiles.

Just wanted to let you know the nesting tables that you liked came from an estate sale--- wish I could point you to a place to pick some up, but not this time.

Such a cute idea! If I ever come across a Scrabble game I'm snapping it up so I can copy this :)

The pendants are cute too...my sister and I make pendants out of dominoes, have yet to try it with tiles.

I like your idea of momentos from paper. Wouldn't that be a great gift to a bride after all of her wedding showers?

Very creative--love it!
I haven't been able to find one yet but my eyes are on the look out. I've seen soo many different ideas at craft fairs. One antique booth at an antique mall we have here used them in their "library"
section to identify the book categories. ie: Fiction, Romance etc.

At least they didn't spell out "boobies" or something. I know a 30 year old who would do that. :s

I LOVE the idea of collecting them in an apothecary or something...my MOPS group is supposed to make the pendant ones this year at some point. I like the decorating version just as much!

This is a great idea!! I had a friend who found an old scrabble board, the kind where the pieces fit into the perfect sized plastic boxes and did her family name and all the kids names off of each other. Difficult to explain, but oh so cool! Love your blog. Following now, hope you can stop by soon!

I love the message idea!! My sister in law and I bought a number of Scrabble games to make pendants. And though we have made a slew of necklaces, we still have so many tiles left over. I really want to try this message idea. I'm not too sure my hubby would play with me though.

Cute.

My mom does something similar with those fridge poetry magnets. She, my lil brother, lil sister, and dad are always leaving each other messages with them. Always fun to read!

Fun post. I ALWAYS nab the Scrabble tiles I find.

I have a set just for spelling words in a mini-muffin tin....

This morning I went to two yard sales. Both had a scrabble game for sale ( 75cents and a dollar) and one had an apothecary jar....yeah. I felt lucky! )
