Freshly Made

One of my recent thrift store purchases was an electric citrus juicer for about $2.  Having one of these was practically essential when we lived in Phoenix, where people would often share bags of oranges and lemons from the trees in their yard.  But here in the midwest it languished on the shelf for a couple of months before I finally picked it up.

This morning Skippy made some freshly squeezed orange juice for himself and his siblings.  Look at that gorgeous color!  We normally get Minute Maid frozen concentrate, because it’s certainly cheaper, but there is nothing like a glass of fresh orange juice!  We’ve also been juicing grapefruit, and the juice is a beautiful rosy color, and so delicious!  It’s not sour at all.

Last week on spaghetti night I made some bread to go with our meal, but I did a little something different than I usually do.  I made a French bread dough in the bread machine, then took it out and formed loaves and baked it in the oven.  I should have let it rise a second time before I put it in the oven, but I didn’t have time.  They turned out really good anyway, and so pretty with an egg wash on the top.  Even the kids told me I needed to get out my camera.

Don’t they look deliciously rustic?

Sometimes a little extra effort really makes a big difference!  Have you tried anything new lately?

P.S.  I had good participation in the first Tuesday’s Tips and Tricks yesterday, so that looks promising!  If you haven’t already, visit a couple of the entries and you just might find some great ideas!

Ooo---freshly squeezed orange juice?? That beats my Tropicana. ;) Before I read that you made the bread yourself, I was thinking those loaves looked like something you might have picked up at Panera! They look great!

When I visited my sister in California last summer she made freshly squeezed juice every morning. What a difference fresh is! I was addicted. I hope I'm lucky to find one at the GW. I keep looking!

Your bread looks wonderful. I haven't cooked in days. It's been a bad week here!

Fresh squeezed juice must be incredible. I don't think I've ever had any except from the grocery store.

I really miss my bread machine - the paddle got broken in the dispose-all. Darn. Wish I weren't so bone idle, I'd make it by hand...

Look at you being all Betty Crocker and stuff! I'm so impressed! I've never made fresh squeezed OJ in my life and I haven't made bread in FOREVER! It looks soooooo goood, especially with a big ole slab of butter. MMMMM!
