Thrift Store Tales

When my sisters were here and cleaned up for me, we sent a lot of stuff to Goodwill.  I had forgotten about it until I was in GW the other day and saw some of my stuff.  It’s always interesting to see the prices they put on your things.  I once saw my chair that I couldn’t sell at a garage sale for $10 priced at $60 at GW!

So, the other day I saw two pairs of boots that I had donated.  One was a pair of Kenneth Cole Reaction ankle boots with a wedge heel.  I paid $3.99 for them at the Salvation Army, and never wore them.  They were cute boots, but just didn’t look cute on me.  GW’s price:  $15.  (Incidentally, I don’t think they were leather; at the time I thought that I had heard that Kenneth Cole was pro-animal and didn’t use leather, but a quick look online proves that false.  Maybe mine were fakes?)

The other pair of boots were knee-high brown pull-ons, again pleather.  They were okay, but not great.  I bought them a couple years ago at a different GW for probably $3, but possibly a little more.  This GW priced them at$12.
Today I went to one of my favorite thrift stores for their 50% off everything Labor Day sale.  I got a couple of things, nothing spectacular, but….
I tried on a pair of jeans (didn’t fit) and found money ($16) in the pocket.  When I checked out I told the girl because I wanted to be completely honest, and she said “bonus for you!”.  So after I paid under $3 for my purchases,  I actually made money on that trip!
Now we know:  check the pockets at the thrift store!

WOW! How cool to find money at GW! I would've told too. I couldn't have lived with myself otherwise.

It always amazes me some of the prices GW puts on their things. That would be interesting to run across old things of yours there!

I too hit up the labor day sale today ;) I haven't checked the pockets yet, but scored some awesome deals! A wool winter coat for $10, dress pants for $3 each, cute shoes, cute jackets and much more! Love these 1/2 off sale days!!!

That would be fun to see stuff you've donated at GW and see what prices they put on the stuff. Yay for you! Not too often you leave any store with more money than what you walked in with!

It's so funny that you found money--my friend and I were talking about that very thing on our trip to GW. She told me to always check the pockets and that one day she hoped to find a big diamond ring someone had forgotten.

That particular goodwill is always insane. How do they sell anything?

Isn't it funny how pricing varies from store to store and visit to visit.

Yeah for the cash!!

Sounds like you had a wonderful weekend! What fun! I have spent my weekend trying to get well...(pout) And then today spent a couple of hours at my in-laws for lunch that they had invited us to a while back for the holiday. We just got home a little bit ago and I am not wiped out! Shoot! I hate being sick! Looks like I'll have to wait to do some thrift store shopping. Thanks for the great advise on checking pockets!!! I never actually have thought of that. Hm...congrats on finding the money! I would have told too..LOL Glad you had a good weekend! Miss you friend!

Ugh. My comment didn't go through the first time. I hate Blogger sometimes. I wanted to say that you're the first person I've *met* who has made money while shopping at a thrift store! Glad you had fun. :)

I helped manage a thrift store for 8 years. Once I found over $300 in a donated handbag. The donor was notified and said the purse belonged to their late mother and that no one was missing the money. They let the store keep it as a donation!

Wow! I'll have to remember to check the pockets next time I try on at GW!

It is really interesting how GW prices things. I have found here PNW that each store is different in pricing, and some of the stores take a real interest in designer name brands and have a "special section" where they are marked up considerably, unlike the other GW stores that do not.

Now thats my kind of shopping. A great deal for you! I have done the same thing at the GW stores. It is amazing to see how something you have just sitting around can turn out to be worth more than you thought....

Have a great day!
Enjoyed your post..

When I went to Washington state in August, my sister and I stopped by my favorite Goodwill. I hadn't been there in over a year, and it was completely changed. It looked more organized and set up more like a store. However, (and I am sure my sister got sick of me saying it) their prices were ridiculous! Things that would be .50 last year were $3.00. Crazy. I did buy a ceramic popcorn bucket from Williams Sonoma, but at $5.99 it was high priced, too. Blah. L.
