WFMW--Baked Grilled Cheese

(After I wrote this, I saw that this week is a themed WFMW...Greatest Tips/Hits. I'm not sure that this climbs to those heights, but I think it's pretty great. It's so simple, and yet it had never occurred to me before I saw this method on allrecipes. Anything that saves time and effort is a great tip in my book.)

Everybody loves a grilled cheese sandwich. It's comfort food at its best. Pair it with a bowl of tomato soup (preferably homemade...yum!) and you've got a quick, simple meal. But if you're making them for more than a couple people, it can get a little tedious standing there and flipping.

I recently discovered that you can bake grilled cheese! That means you can do at least eight at a time on a standard cookie sheet. They turn out great, and it takes less hands-on time.

Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F. Butter eight slices of bread and put butter-side down on cookie sheet. Top with cheese of choice. Butter eight more bread slices and place butter-side up on top of cheese. Bake in preheated oven for 6-8 minutes, flip, and bake 6-8 minutes more, until golden brown.

Toasty, crispy, gooey perfection! Mmmmm!

OH, this is perfect.....I love it. Last night I had to make six grill cheese for the kids and it was so time consuming.....not to mention I burned one side due to tending to said children. I love that this is so easy and quick.

Have a great day

What a great idea! We're down to just two kids now, but my daughter wanted grilled cheese for breakfast, so it's still a favorite. I'll have to remember the oven method for when they're all home again!

Great idea! It definitely does take a while when I've got lots of kids visiting. I'll be testing this out. Thanks!

Thanks for this idea. After making a couple of grilled cheeses, my skillet gets too hot and I sometimes burn one. Guess who gets to eat that one? Definitely going to give this a try.

I'm trying this. We eat a lot of grilled cheese at our house.

I make my own cracked wheat with a hand grinder my parents gave me years ago (similar to the one shown here: http://www.spoilthecook.com/bosch/Back-to-Basics-Hand-Grain-Mill.html). And I buy my whole wheat from the local LDS storehouse/cannery, but I know of others who buy it online. Hope this helps :)

That's funny! That's the only way I've ever known to make grilled cheese! My mom never made it any other way. We always broil it, though. Either way, it's much easier than making it in a skillet!

I am so glad I found your blog. I made grilled cheese in the oven recently.. They didn't turn out to great, the kiddos ate them but they were dried out.. And now I know why, I baked them at 325 degrees because I was afraid to burn them, and i baked them it seemed like forever.
I am going to try it your way next week.. thanks.
450 degrees for sure
