I Want…

I need to preface this whole thing by saying I am not ungrateful.  I’m grateful for my home and I’m grateful for my wonderful husband who works hard and is content to have me stay at home.  Our home is pretty and comfortable, and I enjoy the challenge of making it that way on a budget.  Because being a one income family means, that while we lack for nothing, we have to watch our pennies.

All that said, every once in a while I get in a little funk, and I start “wanting”.  I want an IKEA Ektorp sectional, because the one I got for a good deal on craigslist 18 months ago is not holding up well.  Let’s just say chenille and pets do not mix.

I want a finished basement, because while our house is a decent size, it’s not huge, and we could use more living space.

I want a deck, because we have a walkout basement and a very sloped backyard and right now no convenient way to get out there, so we never use it.

I want Emeco navy chairs for my dining table because I think they’re cool.  I’d even be happy with knock-offs.

Heck, if a McDonald’s in the middle of Podunk, Illinois can have (genuine!) navy chairs, why can’t I?  Saw these while we were on vacation and had to take a photo no matter what they thought of me.

I want hardwood floors instead of a houseful of builder-grade carpet and vinyl that aren’t aging well….and they’re only 2 years old!
sterling 046  Not my kitchen!  This is the model home.

I want satin nickel hardware on all the doors, rather than the metallic yellow that passes for brass.

As a matter of fact, since we’re talking about doors, I finally got a house with white six-panel doors instead of flat hollow-core, and now the thing is two-panel doors.   And I want ’em too!
white_kent2panel But I would paint the trim white!

Sigh.  The thing is, folks, “I want” can go on forever and never be satisfied.  So I try not to go down that road.  Sure, I see things I like.  Sometimes I try to copy them, sometimes I might have to save up, and sometimes I just have to be content that it will never be mine.

Just for fun, and not to promote discontent, is there anything that you particularly want?

I think it's totally okay to covet once in a while! So, speaking of that....

I want a home of our own. Man, I want a home of our own. No more apartments!

I want a car that I KNOW is going to get me through the next several years without any problems.

I want some beds for my kids. They don't have any.

Ok, I think that's it for now lol!

I want my BIL to FINISH my patio. I want something from IKEA, too. I want the Ektorp sofa in white. I want to paint the pine ceiling in my kitchen white. I want a Brother embroidery machine. I want a new desk for my home office. I want a closet system to make my ONE closet (in the entire house) efficient. I will quit whining now...!

It's so funny how it's such a struggle to be satisfied with what we have. I feel the same way, there is so much stuff I want for this house that sometimes I forget that we've been blessed with everything we need. Glad to know I'm not alone!

Oh, girl, I have an "I want" session almost every day. ;) I have a girlfriend with a huge unfinished basement, and she's made it work great for the kids' play area by using remnant carpets from local shops. :)

I'd like to have a basement. We don't have one at all. And a garage for all of T's tools. I'd love to get a big, flat panel TV to replace the big ugly one in the living room. I'd also love to have a new sofa in my family room. Something neutral!

I feel your pain regarding the builder-grade carpet! Our house is about 2 years old and I swear the carpet looks like it's been here since the beginning of time. I want hardwood floors soooo much...*sigh*

I agree it is easy to get sucked into the "I wants..." and forget all that we already have! But just for fun... ;) I want to replace all our flooring... we have vinyl that is impossible to clean and builder's grade carpeting throughout the house. The people that built the house before us were not kind to the carpet or the vinyl and they are ugly and dirty. No matter how I scrub they never look clean to me!! I want hardwood downstairs and fluffy carpet upstairs. And since this is our first house I would like some more furniture... like a bed for our guest room which is currently empty... and a beautiful deck in our barren wasteland of a backyard :)

I want a husband who likes to work on the house and is talented with woodworking tools, etc. ;-) Then most of my "wants" would be taken care of!

I've wanted for many of the things on your list...wood floors, finished basement, a deck, and I've been blessed enough to get those things. And yet, there are still things I want! It reminds me of the saying, "When you get there, you find out that there is no there there." (I believe Gloria Steinem said that?) I want a new sectional for my living room, and also an area rug. But most of all, I want a new house...we've been trying to sell ours for many months, and I'm getting tired of the process! Oh...And I want a Le Crueset dutch oven. <3

I want the Ektorp couch too, but I cannot wear out the Chenille one I have now. It is made of some impervious fabric that refuses to fray, even when the cat sharpens his claws on it. I'm sure if it was some lovely neutral colour (and not dark green) it would not wear so well :-)

The other thing I would like is a new car, even though mine is in fine condition. I'm just tired of it :-)

As humans, we never seem to be satisfied with all that we have. I think this is normal for most people to want things in their life. If we didn't have wants, we wouldn't have things to look forward to. I enjoy adding something new to my house every so often. You asked if I had read the Mitford Series. I have not read the whole series, but I have them all. I have only read the first book. They were set in a town called Blowing Rock in real life. Love & blessings from NC!

I have a serious WANT problem. Most of the time I'm okay with what I have, but sometimes I get a bad case of the wants. I REALLLLY want a Cricut! I really want a new car! I not only want a bigger house, but I neeeeed a bigger house. 1500 sq. ft for 6 people....not fun! I want a big laundry room. I want a finished basement. I want to be a size ten again, but still be able to eat what I want. I want to be able to find a new bedding set that I loooove - and be able to afford it, if and when I find it. The list goes on and on.

Sometimes I dream too! That's what I like to call my wants..a bigger house is one, a studio to work in, and business to keep it all going. Maybe we should consider them goals...working to chip away at them one by one.

I am happy that I have what we need and that my husband has a job, that I wake up in the morning with all my limbs and senses.

Life is good!

Have you seen these Emeco chairs: http://www.dwr.com/product/111-navy-chair.do ? They are still pricey, but half the price of the metal ones and much sturdier feeling. I have 4 of the flint colored ones in my breakfast room and I am in love with them. Even my husband commented on how comfortable they were and he doesn't notice those things. If you want metal- go for a knock-off- frankly I saw the real thing in person and wasn't too impressed!
