My Thrift Dollars at Work

Tonight for dinner I made waffles, using the waffle iron I got at the thrift store a couple of weeks ago, for under $4.  My mom occasionally made homemade waffles, and so does my stepmom, but I’ve never made them myself because up until now I didn’t have a waffle maker.

IMG_2767 I served them topped with strawberries, a dusting of powdered sugar, and whipped cream.  I also gritted my teeth and splurged on real maple syrup, which I haven’t purchased in a while because the prices got so high; some members of the family went hogwild and used all the toppings at once, as you can see above.

I used this Whole Grain Waffles recipe from allrecipes.com.  They were delicious and crispy, and I doubled the recipe so I have some to put in the freezer for easy breakfasts.  I highly recommend picking up a waffle iron at a thrift store or garage sale if you don’t already have one!

May sound odd to you, but my absolute favorite waffles have diced ham and cheese in them. Yes, with maple syrup on top. My husband thought I was nuts, but now that's all he'll make. :p

Great looking waffles! Yum!

That looks delicious! We have one we received as a wedding gift almost 8 years ago, and it still works great. I hate cleaning it though....Will have to see if I can find that whole grain waffle recipe. :)

Yummy! Waffles are the best. And seriously, why has maple syrup gone up in price? I've noticed it going form $7 to $9!

I need to dig out my waffle iron! Yep, I do own one! Given as a gift. I use it every year in my preschool for Pajama Day, but sadly don't use it much at home. Good point about making some to freeze. I'm trying not to buy as many convenience foods!

I tagged you for an award on my blog today. No need to follow-up. I just wanted you to know you're blog is one of the fabulous ones I've recently discovered. ;)

These look so tasty that I too would have put all of the toppings on. Great way to spend $4!

Holly, I love the idea of getting a waffle iron. I think I'll have to look for one of these. I usually find just what I'm looking for if I wait long enough. I LOVE waffles too. Oh, the pecan waffles from Waffle House...hello!
