Going Green

I'm joining Julia's Hooked on Fridays and Melissa's A Beautiful Life today.

My mom had a green thumb. Two green thumbs. Not only was our yard always full of flowers, but the house was always full of house plants. On windowsills, on plant stands, hanging in macrame hangers. If you were born after 1985, you may not know what macrame (ma-cruh-may) is; here is a plant hanger in all its hippie-era earthiness.

I did not inherit the green thumb gene. My few attempts at house plants years ago didn't end well. At some point I just gave up and have never had a living, growing green thing in my house since.

Then the other day I was at Aldi and they had these huge, lush plants for only $8.99. I'm pretty sure a plant this size anywhere else would be at least $25. I couldn't pass it up.

Before.

After.

It really brought my living room to life. I feel like I must point out here that, yes, I know the walls aren't painted and I don't have window treatments and I have a cheap IKEA lamp in the corner. It's only temporary, people. Okay, well verging on semi-permanent. But I will get to it, eventually.

Anyway, my point is the impact one plant made. And in the spirit of Melissa's Beautiful Life (link above), I'm looking at the bright side of what I can do right now. I may go back and get one or two more. I don't want to go overboard, but a little green here and there might be nice. I promise, no macrame.

Now, if only I can keep it alive.

I just heard on the radio yesterday that having plants inside your home is good for your skin, and your productivity!! So yea, just remember to water it weekly and it should be fine.

Love it! I should get some green. My thumbs are NOT green at all! My MIL bought me bamboo bc "you can't kill it". I did.

It's very pretty - it's amazing the difference a little green can make, isn't it. :)

Oh my how I sympathize with not having a green thumb. Once a potted plant sitting on my deck rail fell off as I my friend and I were enjoying the sun. She said, "Your plant just fell." My husband rounded the corner at about the same time and quipped, "It didn't fall, it jumped trying to make a run for its life." Your plant does really liven up that corner and I love the urn you put it in. Have a great weekend!

Oooo...Pretty! It livens up that corner nicely.

I hope you're able to keep it alive! No one in my family has a green thumb, so I feel your pain.

LOVE the plant! And good luck with it cause my thumb is BROWN! I just have horrible luck with plants. I'm doing good with dogs, cats and children tho. LOL Why are plants so HARD?

Oh, I remember macrame! I was actually looking for an old pattern to make a macrame tree at Christmas time! I can't remember how to do it now... but I still like the hippie/natural looks of those things! Bring BACK macrame!
Talk to those plants and water them once in a while - plants are very forgiving. Sometimes they just what a change of view...

It does make such an impact! Oh, yes. I am very old enough to remember macrame. I think I actually created some myself.

That plant is perfect there. What a great buy, too.
My husband wants to hold a wake every time I bring a plant into the house! We even have a "garden room" and the plants barely stay alive.
Your plant is so lush and lovely.

You're right! It did really perk up the room! Good luck with keeping it alive.

I also do not have a green thumb. All my greenery is silk! LOL!

Plants definitely bring a room to life! I love how you are focusing on what you CAN do right now! We don't have to have it all perfect, but it is sure fun to see how a little change can bring a big impact! I love it!
